Hundreds of firefighters from Utah and neighboring states were deployed to fight the blaze and put out fires fueled by winds and seasonally low humidity. Utah National Guard officials said the flames can normally be contained, but local leaders questioned the decision to fire the weapons at all.
Only two people were reported injured in the fire, and two police officers were taken to hospital for smoke inhalation, but only the rapid intervention of the emergency services was enough to keep the fire relatively unharmed. Quee Herbert heard about a fire that broke out at a home in Herriman, about 30 miles west of Salt Lake City, about 1: 30 p.m., according to a news release. The joint fire service was called as the flames spread quickly and officials said the fire service and fire engines contained the flames at about 2.15pm but were not allowed to return to their homes until early evening because of the firefighting. Officials said they contained the flames from at least one fire truck in the apartment at about 3.45am. Firefighters were called to the house at around 2pm and did not arrive until 4.20pm, although the flames quickly started to strike. Firefighters were using fire engines to tackle the house on the city's east side when the flames spread quickly, officials said.
The Deseret News reports that the Utah National Guard has apologized for the fire and admitted to conducting live fire training on the same day that a red flag warning was issued for dry and windy conditions.
